Niagara – Alec Soth

Niagara is a series realised by the American photographer Alec Soth between 2004 and 2006. The project is composed by pictures of the area surrounding the well-known waterfall. Millions of tourists visit this location every year, and this phenomenon led to the formation of a major number of motels and facilities dedicated mainly to those couples who reach the area looking for a romantic vacation. The photos taken within the hotel rooms, like Two Towels, or representing the couple who show their intimacy to the observer, contrast the (very few) images of the waterfall itself. This creates a dychotomy between the ideal of love, temporary and vulnerable, and the limitless force of nature.
