DADEA 01 (European Bison) | Carla Gannis

DADEA 01 (European Bison), 2021, by Carla Gannis is an augmented reality variation of a work from the Do Androids Dream of Endangered Animals (The DADEA series) print series, 2020.
Gannis’s experiments with the AI tools are aimed at creating dream worlds and narratives in which to discuss crucial issues of our time, such as the climate crisis and emergency, in a vague, indeterminate, and therefore more relaxed, atmosphere and space. All the works in the series are born in a strong dialogue with the Artificial Intelligence platform playform.io, working on images of animals in danger of extinction to recreate their mantle through 3D printing or reproduce its consistency to keep track in the future when likely these species animals will no longer exist. DADEA 01 (European Bison) was first featured in an XR work produced by Gannis entitled wwwunderkammer, a contemporary perspective on the sixteenth century’s wunderkammern, or cabinets of curiosities. Carla Gannis’ wwwunderkammer are virtual representations of endangered species, emerging technologies, and other collections that are founded upon de-colonizing, post-human and feminist archives.

DADEA 01 (European Bison) is presented in the collective and traveling exhibition AUGMENTED SPECIES. Invasive Sculptures in Hybrid Ecologies (2021) curated by Tina Sauerlaender and Ursula Ströbele, developed by MoMAR.

The sculptural aesthetic of Gannis’ digital creation, together with the other works in AR by the artists Sofia Crespo & Feileacan McCormick, Joanna Hoffmann and Tamiko Thiel, gives life to an augmented ecology: the works that can be used via smartphone apps in various museums and sculpture gardens in the world, dynamically populate a common space between nature, architecture and artefact, stimulating their hybridization and triggering a reflection on the “augmented” possibilities of sculpture as well as on new worlds in which the coexistence of heterogeneous realities where ephemeral, progression and hybrid are creative concepts towards sustainability.
