With Untitled (Pride and Contempt), Barbara Kruger engages with the spaces of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in Athens, using the power of her visual language to question public space and the everyday experience of its visitors.

Curated by Katerina Stathopoulou, the exhibition presents thirteen site-specific works conceived for the SNFCC’s outdoor spaces, creating a direct dialogue with the urban context.
To directly engage visitors — those simply passing by and looking up, as well as those who encounter the artist’s provocations and reflections while walking through the space — Kruger has created the works in Greek, addressing themes such as truth, power, critical thinking, and the ability to act and take a position within society and the world we inhabit.
Kruger speaks, and makes her works speak, through direct statements and words capable of prompting doubt and critical thought in those who encounter them. Her distinctive, high-contrast visual language powerfully emphasizes, almost shouting, what lies behind those words. She asks questions, inviting us to reflect, to confront ideas, and to engage in dialogue — with ourselves before engaging with others.
Through works such as these, the artist does not allow us to look away: she confronts us with uncomfortable truths and with thoughts that, in our everyday lives, we try to push aside or tend to regard as distant from ourselves. Barbara Kruger’s work invites us to look at the rawest and most complex version of the world we inhabit and, above all, at the way we choose to inhabit it.
