BERND & HILLA BECHER, HISTORY OF A METHOD | FONDAZIONE MAST, BOLOGNA

Bernd & Hilla Becher. History of a Method is currently on view at Fondazione MAST, a retrospective dedicated to the two German artists, key figures in the world of photography in the second half of the twentieth century. Curated by Gabriele Conrath-Scholl, Max Becher, and Urs Stahel, the exhibition highlights the rigor and methodological consistency of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s research through approximately 350 black-and-white photographs and archival materials.
A defining feature of their work is the organization into thematic photographic series, conceived as an objective documentation of specific typologies, including landscapes and industrial structures—the central corpus of their practice and a testimony to a society in the midst of rapid development. Their analytical and descriptive approach to contemporary reality places their visual language in close proximity to minimalism and conceptual art.
