Human in the Loop is the immersive installation presented by 421 Arts Campus in Abu Dhabi and created by artist and robotics engineer Dr. Ahmad AlAttar. The work transforms the gallery into an interactive environment in which visitors move through a game of hide-and-seek with a constantly shifting algorithm. The installation represents a sensory translation of the contemporary digital age, where behaviours, interests, and decision-making processes are increasingly shaped by algorithmic systems that often operate beyond our full awareness.
The installation consists of colourful ropes suspended from the ceiling, which are activated through the visitors’ touch. Each human gesture sets the system in motion, generating sonic responses and feeding the algorithm that drives the experience. In this way, the work invites viewers to reflect on the active role of human beings within the technological sphere, highlighting how every interaction contributes to shaping the behaviour of the systems with which we engage on a daily basis.
