“I’ll Never Ask You” is a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Kasuna Tabushi, on view at mumok – Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, curated by Heike Eipeldauer.
Tabushi’s meticulously constructed black-and-white photographs evoke fragmented bodies, gestures, and gazes that resonate with surrealist traditions, offering a subtle yet poignant inquiry into the photographic representation of the female body. Her images often seem to capture fleeting, almost spectral moments, drawing inspiration from the Japanese concept of Yūgen—a sense of profound, mysterious beauty. Tabushi’s work unfolds through an analog, manual process that explores the convergence of painting and photography. Employing a complex technique, the artist blends various visual sources, hand-painting them and subsequently photographing the compositions in carefully selected settings—environments chosen to harmonize with the specific qualities of each painting.
