Now in its 14th edition, KYOTOGRAPHIE, the photography festival, returns to animate the city of Kyoto between April and May.
Museums, galleries, traditional townhouses, and temples—among the city’s most evocative spaces—become the stage for exhibitions, installations, and talks, offering visitors opportunities to engage more closely with artists and the language of photography.
For this edition, co-directors Lucille Reyboz and Yusuke Nakanishi have chosen Edge as the theme: rather than a boundary, a realm open to possibility.
Among the featured projects is that of Thandiwe Muriu, a Kenyan artist who uses photography to explore themes of cultural heritage and the construction of identity. In her CAMO series, the role of women in society takes center stage: her subjects seem to both emerge and dissolve into the background, blending with it until they become a surface for reflection.
Alongside KYOTOGRAPHIE, the city also hosts KYOTOPHONIE, a music festival that brings together artists from around the world, performing across various venues in dialogue with the theme of the photography festival.
