The memory of antiquity and Mediterranean culture is celebrated in the exhibition Mimmo Jodice. Mediterraneo, curated by Carlo Sala and on view at Palazzo Lanfranchi, part of the National Museums of Matera. Through his photographs, Jodice constructs a visual narrative that conveys the identity of a civilization with deeply rooted historical origins, creating a photographic archaeological survey that spans the entire Mediterranean basin. Yet his works go beyond mere documentation: they are imbued with a strong emotional dimension that complements historical inquiry with the power of imagination. The statues, landscapes, and ruins he portrays acquire an almost suspended presence, enhanced by his masterful use of light and shadow, which lends them a profound evocative intensity. In this way, a symbolic bridge is established between antiquity and the present, embodied in the encounter between the materiality of marble and the photographic medium. This dialogue with the past is further intensified by Jodice’s vintage silver gelatin prints on baryta paper, whose tactile quality reinforces a sense of memory and permanence.
