Thomas Dambo. The Garbage Man brings together the artist’s celebrated monumental troll sculptures, created from reclaimed materials, at the ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art in Ishøj. Through these imposing figures, Dambo creates an immersive environment in which imagination and nature, organic elements and artificial matter intertwine, giving rise to a universe suspended between fairy tale and ecological reflection.
As visitors move through the exhibition, they are drawn into a fantastical narrative populated by creatures that seem to emerge directly from the surrounding landscape. Yet the exclusive use of discarded materials encourages viewers to look beyond the playful and spectacular qualities of the works, prompting a deeper reflection on consumption, reuse, and the relationship between humanity and the natural world.
Dambo’s practice is rooted in the belief that what is commonly regarded as waste can be given a new life. His works demonstrate how recycling can become not only a sustainable act but also a powerful tool for storytelling and for imagining new possibilities.
