The departure from the straight line, confined within predetermined tracks, in favour of deviation—both in its literal and metaphorical sense—lies at the heart of Virage Vierges, Pauline Curnier Jardin’s exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, curated by Daria de Beauvais. Fragmented narratives, ambiguity, and forms of transgression shape the exhibition spaces, inviting visitors to lose themselves as they move through them. At the centre of the artist’s inquiry is the body, particularly the female body, which, rather than remaining an object of idealisation and commodification, becomes the active subject of a narrative that reconstructs its own path, free from constraint, forging its way towards unexplored and untouched territories. The exhibition brings together video installations and sculptures that create fantastical environments, designed by Rachel Garcia, and marked by a theatrical and ritual dimension that has long been a defining feature of the artist’s practice.
