RUSSULA MUSHROOM WITH TOAD (FUNGI) | PETER ANDREW LUSZTYK

Peter Andrew Lusztyk (1982) is a photographer who uses the image as a means to suspend a moment and return it to the viewer in a new form. His work focuses primarily on elements of everyday life—objects, surfaces, natural organisms—which are isolated from their usual context and presented under a different, almost revelatory light. Through meticulous observation and an approach that combines technical rigor with artistic sensitivity, Lusztyk invites the viewer to reconsider objects and moments taken for granted, revealing their complexity and hidden beauty.
Fascinated by the enigmatic world of fungi and their almost mystical aura, the artist devotes to them the series Fungi, in which he explores this natural realm from a fresh perspective. His photographs do not merely isolate the organism, but also include a portion of the surrounding ground, thus creating true suspended microcosms. Lusztyk chooses to depict them not simply as botanical specimens, but as small, self-sufficient worlds: he photographs them together with the clump of earth to which they belong, transforming them into floating ecosystems, suspended in the void and removed from the linear flow of time, thereby emphasizing the magical and surreal dimension of these organisms. This mode of representation lends the images an almost sculptural quality. The result is a balance between documentation and contemplation: what is observed is real, yet it seems to belong to a parallel world.
In the work Russula Mushroom with Toad, the protagonist is a russula, recognizable by its bright red cap and white stem, still rooted in the ground yet depicted in a void, as if extracted from its natural setting. Among the tufts of grass, a small toad also emerges, with brown and orange hues, adding a further narrative element and reinforcing the idea of a living, pulsating ecosystem. The coexistence of the mushroom and the animal suggests a natural microcosm, a chance encounter made eternal by the photograph. This compositional choice gives the impression of still being inside the forest. The neutral background removes any reference to a photographic studio, amplifying the sense that that fragment of nature continues to exist autonomously, suspended between reality and imagination.
