DAVID CLAERBOUT, THE QUIET MACHINE | FONDAZIONE MAST, BOLOGNA

The spaces of Fondazione MAST host The Quiet Machine, the first major solo exhibition in Italy by Belgian artist David Claerbout, curated by Francesco Zanot.

The exhibition traces the artist’s practice, which focuses on the relationship between industry, nature, and technology, through a range of media, including film, photography, and drawing.
To fully engage with Claerbout’s works, viewers must confront a perception of time that departs from the rhythms of everyday viewing. The artist investigates the nature of time, questioning the relationship between stillness and movement, waiting and observation. Among the works on display is Eagle Eye (2026), one of the previously unseen films presented in the exhibition. Running for seven hours and thirty-one minutes, the film features a bald eagle, captured from different viewpoints in an image that invites viewers to reflect on the duration of the act of looking itself.
The Quiet Machine thus offers a multifaceted view of Claerbout’s practice. His works do not simply ask viewers to believe what they see, or to question its degree of reality or artifice; rather, they invite them to take part in a transformation that unfolds over time. A time that is stretched out, whose passage we perceive only when we become aware of its duration.

Dates: from October 29, 2026, to February 7, 2027
