Ten years after his death, the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense, together with the Fondazione Umberto Eco, pays tribute to Umberto Eco with the exhibition project Umberto Eco, L’isola del giorno prima. Libri, mari e macchine del sapere.
Curated by Carlotta Eco, Riccardo Fedriga and Marina Zanetti, the exhibition takes its starting point from the novel L’isola del giorno prima (1994), which tells the story of Roberto de la Grive, a young nobleman who, in the summer of 1643, is shipwrecked aboard his vessel, the Amarilli. Having survived the shipwreck, the protagonist boards another apparently abandoned vessel, found a mile away from a mysterious island. Before long, however, he begins to doubt that he is alone: too many details lead him to suspect that someone else is sharing the ship with him, and that it may never have been truly abandoned.
The exhibition brings together Eco’s drawings and handwritten notes, rare and historic books, novels, and original images related to the story, spanning philosophy, literature, art, science and technology. Together, these materials convey the complexity of Eco’s intellectual universe and his understanding of knowledge as a system of connections, capable of bringing together knowledge and imagination.
